A  widespread, chilly rain will develop this afternoon and it won't take leave of the metro area for at least another day.

Today: Damp and cold with patchy a.m. rain becoming widespread
Highs: Steady temperatures: 39°-44°
Wind: NE 5-10 mph

Overnight: Rain Likely
Lows: 34°-40°
Wind: NE 5-10 mph

Tomorrow: Morning rain and fog. Some evening sunshine possible
Highs: 44°-48°
Wind: NW 4-8 mph

Patches of light rain will continue this morning across parts of the area. Areas of steadier, more widespread rain will arrive later this afternoon. This will be due to an area of low pressure moving along a stationary front that lies across the southern mid-Atlantic states.

Between one-half and one inch of rain is expected across the area before it ends tomorrow morning. Considerable fog is possible, as well. Skies will brighten tomorrow afternoon.

High pressure will take control on Thursday and remain in control through the weekend. This will provide partly to mostly sunny skies and comfortable January temperatures. Colder air may arrive on Sunday and Monday. There is a chance of significantly colder air arriving by Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.

We continue to closely monitor weather conditions leading up to President Barack Obama's second Inaugural on Monday. Right now, it looks like skies will be partly cloudy with temperatures in the upper 30s early Monday afternoon.
