Snow lovers will be disappointed with the storm system passing south of our region late tonight. Rain will develop this afternoon. Temperatures will reach the middle 40s. Then tonight, the area of low pressure will start to draw slightly colder air into our area. This means the rain will mix with then change to snow. This changeover will occur north and west of Washington first, then progress south and east through the Washington area. Above freezing air temperatures and mild roadway surface temperatures will mean wet roadways and only a coating on other surfaces. Far northern and western suburb could see an inch or two accumulate mostly on grassy areas.
The western slopes of the mountains could see 3 to 5 inches and have been placed under a Winter Weather Advisory.
Partly to mostly sunny and mild weather is forecast for Thursday and Friday. But much colder air will arrive over the weekend. It will be breezy with highs only in the 30s. Scattered flurries will be possible, as well.
