Sunny skies and mild temperatures will return for Valentine's Day.

Tonight: Mostly Cloudy, Rain/Snow Ends

Lows: 30s | Wind: NW 4-8 m.p.h.

Thursday: Mostly Sunny, Mild

Highs: Around 50 | Wind: NW 4-8 m.p.h.

Friday: Partly Sunny, Showers After Sunset

Highs: Low 50s | Precipitation: 30% PM

A few patches of light rain will be possible through this evening across the region with temperatures in the 40s. Later tonight, as an area of low pressure develops over southeastern Virginia, we expect areas of rain to slowly mix with and then change to snow as slightly colder air is drawn into the circulation. Given air and road surface temperatures and a lack of a discreet source of cold air, this entire scenario remains highly dubious.

If there is a turnover to snow and some patches of heavier snow develop, I suppose we could indeed see and inch or two along and west of the Blue Ridge and the Catoctins. But in the metro areas of Washington and Baltimore, no accumulation is expected. Some grassy areas could get a coating should those heavier patches develop. Otherwise, not much impact is expected and skies will clear by sunrise.

Sunny and mild weather will return tomorrow and partly sunny skies will prevail on Friday. Highs will be near 50 degrees tomorrow and in the lower 50s on Friday. A strong cold front within a trough of low pressure will push through the region late Friday. Rain showers and eventually a few snow showers may accompany and then follow the front. On Saturday, skies will be partly to mostly cloudy and it will be much colder with highs only in the upper 30s. And on Sunday, it will be partly sunny, breezy and very cold with a chance of flurries.
