A large meteor exploded in the morning sky over Russia.  It's been called a "meteorite" but so far nothing has been found on the ground.  The huge fireball and explosion was a "meteor" or large space rock crashing into the earth's atmosphere and traveling at a speed as high as 40 miles per second.  A large space rock such as this may enter the atmosphere once or twice a year, but since 3/4 of the Earth is water, most are not observed and certainly not felt in urban areas such as today's spectacular and damaging event in Russia.
