After producing a delightful day on Friday, Mother Nature is giving an encore performance today! Like yesterday when the high reached 50 under sparkling blue skies, today is similarly sunny and likely even milder: look for highs in the middle 50s this afternoon and light southerly breezes.
Our streak of exceptionally nice days, however, will end at two, as a low pressure center to our southwest will begin spreading clouds and rain by late tonight. Tapping into plenty of Gulf and Atlantic moisture, the low will move up the seaboard as a coastal low, dropping anywhere from a half-inch to an inch of rain on the DC area during the day on Sunday. It will be a chilly rain with daytime highs reaching only the lower 40s.
The system is expected to move out to the northeast rather quickly, ushering in colder air for Monday. Indeed, chillier than normal temperatures are likely through much of the coming week. New Year's Day, for example, should see readings only in the 30s and there's a chance of light snow on Thursday when the high temperature will struggle to reach the freezing point. So enjoy this last of the balmy days before the chill sets in!
