Today will be the relative calm between the storms with partly sunny skies, brisk northwesterly winds, and highs in the low 40s.  Look for snow and then a wintry mix on Sunday.

This Afternoon:
Partly Sunny, Chilly, Breezy
Highs: 39-44
Wind: N 10-15/G 25 mph
Tonight:
Increasing Clouds, Cold
Lows: 23-30
Wind: N 5-10 mph
Sunday:
Snow, Sleet, & Freezing Rain
Highs: 30-34
Snow: 100% Chance

After a wet and especially dreary Friday, today promises to be a sunnier and more attractive day with highs in the low 40s and northerly winds gusting to 25 mph.  But our sunny respite will be brief.  Today's high pressure will yield to a system to our southwest that will begin to spread wintry precipitation our way on Sunday.  With plenty of cold air and the requisite amount of moisture in place, tomorrow should see an initial burst of snow and sleet before mixing with and changing over to freezing rain in the afternoon.  A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for most of the DC metro area from 9 AM Sunday until 7 AM Monday.  Snowfall totals of one to two inches are possible as is a bit of icing.  Temperatures will hover near the freezing point all day and into Sunday night when the freezing rain could change over to all rain.

Monday morning could see a continuation of the rain/freezing rain mix before temperatures rise to the near 40 by afternoon.  Thereafter, high pressure returns for the rest of the week with mostly sunny but very cold days.  Highs in the low 30s and nighttime lows in the teens and 20s will leave no doubt that winter is here.  Be careful tomorrow as you enjoy your weekend.

NOTE: The last time DC saw at least an inch of snow was January 26, 2011 when 5 inches fell.
