It may be the shortest day of the year with sunshine at a premium, but this winter solstice will feel more like the start of spring! After an especially chilly month full of frozen precipitation, this weekend's warmth will be a Christmas gift from Mother Nature. With a Bermuda high off the Carolina coast and strong southwesterly winds, the temperatures are soaring into the mid 60s, a full 20 degrees above normal. Low pressure is tracking to the west and will eventually bring some showers to the DC area later tomorrow. But until then, we can luxuriate in short sleeve weather. Near record warmth is possible on Sunday with highs in the low 70s; the record for the date is 72 set back in 1889. It's also likely that minimum high records will be set today and tomorrow; the records are 51 and 49, respectively.
After some rain and even some thunderstorms tomorrow, we'll enjoy yet one more relatively mild day on Monday with temperatures falling from near 60 through the day. Thereafter, high pressure and more seasonably chilly air return. Look for daytime highs only in the upper 30s and lower 40s from Christmas Eve through week's end. All the more reason to enjoy this weekend "vacation" as Florida has come to us!
