Here is just an example of the devastation the Bolivar Peninsula recieved from Hurricane Ike. You can see the same house still standing in the picture above, the first with two rows of houses in front of it, the next with only two other houses standing beside it. By my rought count, there seems to be at least 50 houses there completely destroyed and wiped clear of their foundations. That just goes to show the sheer force that the storm surge can have as it comes inland. This was provided by an aerial shot from the United States Geological Survey.
