Another Weekend, Another Chance for Rain
posted by Alex Liggitt: Producer/Meteorologist

Another weekend is approaching and once again there is a chance for rain and thundershowers.  This has happened in each of the past 4 weekends, or we could just say that in every weekend in April, it rained.  Well, at least now we have a new month so maybe we can hope for less rain at least on the weekends.  Our drought monitor is actually looking pretty good, with abnormally dry conditions and moderate drought in southern Virginia, but that is expected to improve over the next couple of weeks.

This weekend will bring with it a cold front that is expected to come through the region Saturday night.  The day on Saturday should be warm and pleasant with highs near the 80 degree mark.  With the main area of low pressure to the northwest and tracking into Canada, precipitation totals should be affected as energy with the system will be displaced northwards and taken away from our area.  That overall is a good thing, as right now there is a good amount of severe weather going on through the Mississippi Valley region and that should not be the case once it comes through the DC area.  What I would expect are a few showers, with a chance for a few embedded thunderstorms, and rain totals generally light, except of course in any of the localized thunderstorms.

Sunday, this cold front is expected to move out of the area and a few showers will be possible in the morning hours before tapering off and becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon.  With the main area of low pressure displaced so far northward, cooler air isn't expected to filter in behind the front, so highs are expected to reach the lower 70s.

What about the next weekend??  Just for fun, taking a look at some of the extended models shows yet ANOTHER chance for showers late next week into next weekend.  I really wonder how many weekends in a row that we can go with measurable rainfall!
