We all now know that the Fall or Autumnal Equinox is approaching as it occurs this coming Monday at 11:44am. Even if you didn't know, now you do. I am a little depressed myself, as I love the warm weather and have been utterly disappointed in the past two winters. I mean, reallyyyy...4.9 inches last year at Reagan National!?! So weak! Anyways, back to the Fall. The date this year is September 22nd, where at exactly 11:44am plus or minus a few seconds, the sun lies directly over the Equator. There is also nearly equal amounts of daylight and darkness on the equinox (hence the word), but this year we actually do not go below 12 hours of daylight until the 26th, when we have 11 hours and 58 minutes of daylight. Now I will really try to stretch the daylight, as civil twilight makes the day nearly an hour longer, which adds our "daylight" up to 13 hours. I just really can wait for a while before we hit our low of 9 hours and 26 minutes between December 20th and 22nd, though the holidays do make that a bit better. That's just a little bit better than Nome, Alaska, which has only 3 hours and 53 minutes of daylight come the Winter Solstice.
