Tranquil Week Ahead?
posted by Alex Liggitt: Producer/Meteorologist

After all of the commotion with Hurricane Ike last week, and the thunderstorms that passed through during the afternoon hours on Saturday, and the extremely HOT weather that the region experienced yesterday, there is just one word that can sum up the upcoming week; normal.  A cold front passed through the region this morning, and winds have changed to the northwest and are quite breezy, gusting up to 30 mph at many of our WeatherBug stations across the region.

Winds are expected to die down overnight, and temperatures should fall into the 50s and 60s under mostly sunny skies.  High temperatures the remainder of the week (Tuesday through the weekend) are anticipated to only reach the mid  to upper 70s.  Our normal high this time of year is 80 degrees, and this stretch of cooler temperatures will be greatly welcomed after this past weekend where our highs hit 93 and 92.  Just on a side note, we were only 1 degree away from the record high on Saturday and 2 degrees away from the record high on Sunday at Reagan National Airport.  Let's just say I hope the high heat is coming to an end.

Fall around here should be spectacular.  With the large surplus of rainfall we have had through the year, the colors should be great and the peak time period from the Shenandoah Valley eastward to DC should be around October 15 to 25.  A good site with a few links is at the University of Virginia Climatology Office webpage:  http://climate.virginia.edu/foliage.htm

I'll be making more posts this week, so check back often!
