Tom--you have captured the crux of our US challenge. The US spends more money on numerical prediction models than any other country. Improving teamwork and collaboration across government agencies, academia and non-governmental agencies; relatively small investments (when compared to other national infrastructure investments) in operational High Perfomance Computing, with an emphasis on next generation HPC technologies; and an independent verification and validation system for infusing the best science the Nation has to offer into the operational models would likely return the US to prominence. It is vital to our weather sensitive economy where billions in unnecessary costs are absorbed by businesses due weather uncertainty; national security to include energy and food security, and in defeating adversaries; national air traffic safety and efficiency; and reducing loss of life here at home.
