Fire investigators are looking into what caused a fatal apartment fire in Northwest, Saturday morning. D.C. firefighters were called to the 3,000-block of Van Ness Street, NW around 10:30 a.m. where they found the fire isolated in one of the units on the 6th floor.
ABC 7/Newschannel 8 reporter Jackie Congedo has learn 78-year-old Myrel "Mimi" Starfiled was found dead inside that apartment.

Some residents who evacuated the building said they did not hear an alarm. D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Alan Etter said the building's strobe alert when off but an audio alarm did not sound because it has to be manually pulled to work.
Authorities state the cause of the victim's death remains unknown at this time. They believe the fire may have started after an electrical short or from the woman smoking in bed, but do not have an official cause at this time.
This is the first fire related death of the year. There were 12 fire related deaths in 2007.
