Passengers Unfazed By Higher Metro Fares

Many Metrorail riders said they'll continue to take the train to work, even though they're unhappy about the new, higher rush-hour fares.
But others said the fare hike is likely to drive them back to their cars. The new fare structure took effect Monday, with riders paying an extra 30 to 75 cents, depending on the length of the trip. Parking rates at suburban lots went up, too, by 75 cents. Some commuters said the operators of nearby coin-operated lots also raised their rates by as much as a dollar.
Metro officials said it will be several months before they know what effect the fare and fee increases will have on long-term ridership.
