Ex-Mayor Pleads No Contest to Running Brothel
posted 3:36 pm Tue January 08, 2008 - Dumfries, Va.
The former Mayor of Dumfries pleaded no contest in Prince William County Circuit Court Tuesday in connection with running a brothel.
Melvin "Mel" Bray, who served as the mayor of Dumfries from 2002 to 2006, entered his plea to the misdemeanor charge of keeping a bawdy house. Bray had the charge of receiving money for running a house of prostitution dropped as part of a plea agreement.
Substitute Circuit Court Judge William Shore Robertson sentenced Bray to 12 months in jail for the misdemeanor charge; all the time was suspended.
Bray will serve no time in jail as long as he breaks no laws and remains on good behavior in the next three years, according to the terms of the plea agreement.
The 72-year-old Bray was accused of running a brothel out of Yorkshire Sports Therapy center on Centreville Road last July after Prince William County police raided the clinic.
Police seized thousands of dollars and charged Bray along with eight other people in connection with the brothel.
Fifty-three-year-old Hee Ma Jeung was also in court Tuesday in connection with the brothel. She pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct and was sentenced to 90 days in jail, with all 90 days suspended.
The seven others charged are scheduled to appear in court next week.----
