Maryland Lawmakers to Review Real ID Legislation
posted 9:26 am Thu January 10, 2008 - Annapolis, Md.
Looming federal guidelines on more-secure driver's licenses will be discussed Thursday by Maryland lawmakers getting an update on the federal Real ID law.
The law is aimed at making it harder for would-be terrorists to get a license. But the 2005 law has still not been put in place because of difficulties balancing national security with ease of getting and using the licenses. A committee in the Maryland Senate is hearing testimony Thursday about how Maryland would implement the law. Some Democrats have said Maryland should join other states in refusing to comply with a law some consider onerous. Republicans are pushing for Maryland to adopt more-secure licenses and to ban illegal immigrants from getting licenses.
