No. Virginia Agency Allocates Fund for Streetcar Plan
posted 7:02 am Mon January 14, 2008 - Arlington, Va.
The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority is getting behind plans for a streetcar line.
The agency approved nearly $37 million for a 4.7-mile line along Columbia Pike, connecting Pentagon City to the Skyline area in Fairfax County.
Supporters believe streetcars are more appealing to potential transit users than buses and can reduce congestion on area roads, but there are skeptics.
Meanwhile, the plan will go nowhere if the authority doesn't win a Virginia Supreme Court challenging its ability to raise taxes.
Advocates hope the streetcar line would be the first in a network stretching from Alexandria to Tysons Corner.
