Study Finds Care Disparities at Nursing Homes

A study has found a gap in the quality of care given to black and white residents at nursing homes in Maryland and Virginia.
Researchers affiliated with Brown University's medical school found black residents at nursing homes in both states are more likely than white residents to be hospitalized for poor nutrition, dehydration, bedsores and other ailments. The researchers found hospitalization rates were 24 percent in 2000 for black nursing home residents and 19 percent for white residents.
The researchers concluded that the poorest nursing home residents nationwide were the most likely to be hospitalized.
The study is scheduled to be published in the June issue of the journal Health Services Research; findings were released online in November.
