Accusations Fill Council Hearing on School Closures
posted 6:47 am Tue January 15, 2008 - Washington
D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee says concerns from the community have already changed some of her thinking about her choice of 23 schools to be closed.
Some parents voiced suspicious about Rhee's plan during a marathon D.C. Council hearing that stretched late into the night. The testimony included accusations, ranging from racism to poor planning.
Many parents are urging a boycott of 23 simultaneous meetings on the issue Thursday night, complaining that Mayor Adrian Fenty and Rhee can't attend them all. Opponents are holding a meeting of their own at the Wilson Building.
But Rhee says she is listening. She says members of the community have already convinced her that she should consider academic achievement when deciding which schools should close.
