Supervisors Nix More Parking at Vienna Metro Station
posted 8:53 am Tue January 15, 2008 - Fairfax, Va.
Fairfax County supervisors have placed a hold on plans to add more than 1,000 parking spots at the Vienna Metrorail station.

They're citing parking improvements at nearby stations and a lack of public outcry when a temporary surface lot at the Vienna station closed in 2006. The lot was closed to make way for the Metro West development.

There are more than 5,800 parking spots at the Vienna station, which sits at the end of the Orange Line in northern Virginia. According to Metro, more than 13,000 people start their ride at the station every weekday.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?Metro approved a parking garage addition at the Vienna station in 1999, but the county has to fund the estimated $40 million project.

Now, if the county were smart and would like to raise money for other improvements, it should build a parking lot or deck close to the metro, shuttle folks via mini van or bus, and charge folks, a small fee. I'm am certain that many county residents wouldn't mind this is the parking fee is minimal compared to Metro's arm and a leg cost now. This would take away the creation of repainting the parking spaces making them smaller and cramming more vehicles into a lot which way over-charges individuals and you can never get out of. Even building commuter lots like PW County on non-residntial or commercial partials of land would ease congestion at major intersections and people could actually get to and from work at normal hours. Sounds like a viable solution for the EPG Projects via BRAC. All in favor?
