Georgetown DMV Center Reopens After FBI Raid
posted 6:44 am Thu January 17, 2008 - Washington
The D.C. Department of Motor Vehicle's Georgetown service center is open again Thursday, one day after the FBI arrested a DMV employee accused of illegally selling driver's licenses. Officials say the employee was one of six people arrested during a raid on the DMV's Georgetown branch. The raid caused the office on M Street to close for the day. Officials say the branch will be open as usual Thursday.
The suspects' names weren't released, but authorities say only the Georgetown employee works for the city. Officials won't say how many licenses might have been involved.
Authorities say suspicious activity was uncovered about eight months ago in an internal investigation. The D.C. inspector general's office took over from there, alerting the FBI and other law enforcement authorities.
Mayor Adrian Fenty says investigators believe the operation had been going on for about a year. He says the city will not tolerate corruption.Three years ago, a similar incident took place at the same service center.
