Maryland Considers Trans Fat Study
posted 4:55 am Mon January 21, 2008 - ANNAPOLIS, Md.
Artificial trans fat is up for consideration this week in the Maryland legislature, as a House committee prepares to consider setting up a study to decide whether trans fat should be banned in restaurants.
A trans fat ban has already taken effect in Montgomery County, and the study proposal would be to consider whether the ban could be extended statewide. States from Connecticut to California have looked to mimic the success of large cities like New York in banning artery-clogging trans fats from restaurants.
But in the 14 states that have so far proposed a ban or restriction, not a single bill has been passed.
Restaurants generally oppose the ban, saying it will add to their bottom line. But sponsors of Maryland's bill says it's time to consider banning the artery-clogging trans fat. A House committee takes up the idea Tuesday.
