The 'Give Project' Helps Hundreds in Hagerstown
posted 5:32 pm Mon January 21, 2008 - Hagerstown, Md.
Hundreds of people all across Hagerstown are getting something for nothing, and the idea is catching on.
Just a few weeks ago, Pastor Patrick Grach decided to pratice what he preached and gave away the $6,000 he had saved towards buying a new car.
"My wife's first reaction was, you can't do this," said Grach.
But soon she agreed, and Grach gave the cash to 220 parishoners with a catch.
"Those are the best sermons, when you're living what you're talking about," said Grach. "Their only responsibility was to take that gift, not keep it, but use it to help someone in the community."
And that's what they did.
6-year-old Joshua gave his money to sick kids, others gave groceries, gas, and winter coats promoting many of the recieipients to call and say thanks.
Joseph Profilio passed it on to a coworker fighting cancer.
"She misses time, she misses a whole day pay, so I decided she's someone I'd love to bless with the money," explained Profilio.
A number of people are still trying to decide how to give their gifts, including the person who was given $1000 to pass along.
And while strangers enjoy these newfound windfalls, Pastor Grach is back in his old 1997 Nissan Altima with 125,000 miles on it.
"What we have is more than enough and I honestly look at my car now as a gift," stated Grach.
