Maryland Lawmakers Mulling Panel to Study Trans-Fat Ban
posted 5:36 pm Tue January 22, 2008 - Annapolis, Md.
A state lawmaker who wants Maryland to become the first state in the nation to ban trans-fats in restaurants has proposed a panel to study the idea for one year.
Democratic Delegate James Hubbard tried last year to ban the artery-clogging fats, but the bill failed. Now, he is trying to assemble a task force to examine how a ban could be implemented statewide.
Hubbard comes from Montgomery County, which started implementing a countywide ban at the beginning of the year. Hubbard says the study panel should look at Montgomery and cities with trans-fat bans, such as New York City, for guidance how to get rid of the fats.
The Restaurant Association of Maryland, which fought Hubbard's ban last year, supported his idea for a study panel. Melvin Thompson, the group's head, told lawmakers that restaurants are ready to talk about a possible statewide ban.
Lawmakers did not take a vote on Hubbard's idea.
