Panel: Overfishing Hurts the Chesapeake's Blue Crabs
posted 7:45 am Wed January 23, 2008 - NEWPORT NEWS, Va.
A report by a panel of scientists says the Chesapeake Bay's blue crab population has been declining largely because of overfishing.
The Virginia Marine Resources Commission organized the panel last year to assess the effectiveness of Virginia's crabbing laws. Their report was delivered to the commission Tuesday - and commission officials say changes must be made. The report says the bay's blue crab population is about 30 percent of the size it was in the early 1990s, and Virginia watermen have exceeded the targeted fishing rate eight of the last 10 years.
The commission plans to hold a public hearing next month to discuss short-term actions - like shortening the crabbing season - that can be put in place immediately.
