Senate Panel Advances Virginia Abusive Driver Fee Repeal
posted 10:09 am Wed January 23, 2008 - RICHMOND, Va.
Legislation to repeal punitive fees on bad drivers cleared an important Senate obstacle Wednesday with unanimous support from the Finance Committee.
The voice vote combined several measures to end the abusive driver fees into one and puts it on track for a Senate floor vote early next week. Senator Edward Houck's bill advances without a provision for reimbursing people who've already paid the fee. It also doesn't prescribe any new source of money to replace the projected 60 million dollars a year the fees were expected to generate.
Virginians were outraged when the fees took effect in July and they discovered nonresidents don't have to pay them.
