Maryland Scientists Survey Chesapeake Bay Crabs
posted 5:52 am Mon January 28, 2008 - CAMBRIDGE, Md.
It's time for Maryland's crab survey, and scientists from the Department of Natural Resources are headed out Monday from Dorchester County to work on the annual estimate of the Chesapeake Bay's crab population.
The survey is done to guide state fisheries officials on how well blue crabs are doing and whether catch limits and guidelines need to be tweaked. Last year, Maryland officials expressed alarm over seeing a low number of juvenile crabs, so they'll be looking this year to see whether that trend continues.
The winter crab survey will be completed by April. The survey has been done since 1989.
