Kaine Continues to Push for Dulles Rail
   posted 11:24 pm Tue January 29, 2008 - Washington
Virginia Governor Tim Kaine says he has been talking directly with Transportation Secretary Mary Peters about how to save the Dulles rail project.

"They're thinking about nobody. They're thinking about themselves and their government," said commuter Ali Mahamud who rides two buses, which takes two hours, for him to get to work.

The Federal Transit Administration has indicated that crucial federal funding for the Metro extension is almost a lost cause. But Kaine says state officials are confident that they can answer the FTA's concerns.

"Think out 20 to 25 years and imagine this corridor without rail. The congestion would be mind-numbing," said Chair of Fairfax Co. Board of Supervisors Gerald Connolly.

Speaking on WTOP radio Tuesday, Kaine said the state will probably respond in writing to Peters by the end of the week. He says officials will request further dialogue.

Regional business groups have taken out a full-page ad in The Washington Post, urging President Bush to help move the project along. Meantime, commuters say the tie-up for money is just like the traffic they face each say on the roads. They say they are tired of both. "You look at any major capital in the world and they have rail to their international airport. Why don't we," asked Peter Scott.

OK soap box time...Jerry Connelly, is so short minded. He says to look aout 20-25 years from now, the congestion in this corridor would be mind numbing. Hello, look at it now! Mr. Connelly will be long gone, retired and moved to Florida or Arizona before this project gets out to Dulles. He has no impact on this what so ever. If they (GOV Kaine) really wanted a rail extension out to Dulles, then he should take a heaping load of money from the Richmond and Norfolk/ Hampton Roads Corridor to fund this project. There are much needed other projects around this country that the transportation board needs to worry about. What if ten years from now, the Federal Government decided to decentralize and start to move existing facilities outside the region to prevent the Metroplex Syndrome and severe congestion to where teletransportation would be the only way to work? A lot of folks will move with those facilities and jobs, and the local traffic congestion will diminish, along with local economies supplying pocket change for your local executives. We wouldn't want that to happen! Well, if we dump a boat load of money into this project, and that occurs, then who will benefit. Yeah, it looks good on resumes saying I helped push this project, but, you'll be long gone and the new generation will be left holding the bag. What about using the money from the Dulles toll road to fund this project. This road has been paid for ten times over with the funds already collected, and yet the money is being funneled to Richmond. Viriginia residents, stand up to those folks. You have a right to ask, who, what, where, when, and how when your tax dollars. One more item to note. Look at the Springfield mixing bowl project. many years to add 20+ loops of confusion and it saves only 20 seconds on the commute on a good day and a two hour parking lot on a bad day. Great job VDOT and Richmond.
