A new report says about one out of every three Maryland public school children in grades K through 3 had untreated cavities in recent years.

The report was released Tuesday by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Secretary John Colmers says the findings are in line with the conclusions of a special committee he convened last year after a 12-year-old Prince George's County boy died from a dental infection. The report also found that less than 30 percent of the children received dental sealants to protect their teeth from decay. The report evaluated about 2,300 children.
