D.C. Announces Construction of Streetcar Infrastructure

D.C. transportation officials have broken ground on a new project that will lay the groundwork for the return of streetcars in the burgeoning H Street corridor in northeast Washington. Officials say construction for the $65 million in infrastructure and streetscape upgrades is expected to last three years. It's part of the city's Great Streets project to improve transportation and features for pedestrians such as new traffic signals, streetlights, sidewalks and utility work.
Work began in December on the Benning Road portion of the project and will start soon on H Street. On Thursday, officials said both streets will remain open during construction.
Mayor Adrian Fenty says it's a good example of the city preserving historic and culturally rich neighborhoods.
