ROCKVILLE, Md. - An elderly couple is safe following quick action by their son and their neighbors after a fire broke out at their Rockville home.
It happened in the 700 block of Shetland Street around 12:45 p.m. Sixty-five firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire. Fire officials say the smoke detector delayed in alerting the family because the fire appeared to have started in a wall of the home or on the outside of the home.
An elderly couple was able to get out in time thanks to the help of neighbors and their adult son who also lives in the home.
Officials say the fire was accidental in nature. Damage is estimated at $350,000. The Red Cross will assist the family.
