WASHINGTON - D.C. police shot and killed a stabbing suspect Monday morning in the District after some kind of altercation broke out between two people at home in Northeast and a man was stabbed.
Witness Carlton Green said one man in the home "was threatening everybody in the house with (a) knife."
Two veteran officers responded to reports of an assault at the home in the 800 block of 7th Street NE about 10:45 a.m.
The officers "could hear screaming coming from the inside," Police Chief Cathy Lanier (web | news | bio) said. "They had to force entry to the home because the door was closed and locked."
Inside the home, the officers found one man suffering from two stab wounds, including one to the neck. They also found the suspect, Osman Aydarus Abdullahi, 36, who was still armed with the kitchen knife and a metal pole.
"He attacks the officer, at least one of the officers was struck with a pole two or threes times," Chief Lanier said, recounting the incident.
According to Green, the knife-wielding man shouted, "Go ahead and shoot me," at police.
Another witness, Johnny Johnson, said officers "tried to reason with him, and all of a sudden I heard a gunshot."
Abdullahi was pronounced dead at the scene. The presumed stabbing victim was taken to an area hospital where he was admitted for treatment of apparently non-life-threatening stab wounds, police said. His identity is being withheld because he is a witness in the case.
The officer who was struck by the pole suffered minor injuries, police said.
The officer who opened fire was described as a 7-year veteran of the force. He was placed on routine administrative leave.
