Police Check Report of Child Thrown from Maryland Bridge
posted 6:22 am Tue February 05, 2008 - Baltimore
A scaled-back search was expected to continue Tuesday following a report that an adult threw a child from the Francis Scott Key Bridge into the Patapsco River.
Helicopters and boats scoured the surface of the Patapsco River Sunday and Monday after police received a 911 call shortly before 11 p.m. Rescue workers from several agencies quickly searched the waters near Baltimore's outer harbor. The search resumed after dawn Monday.
Maryland Transportation Authority police spokesman Cpl. Jonathan Green says authorities have found no physical evidence confirming the report, but they are taking it seriously.
Green says police are interviewing a person of interest, but he isn't giving additional details about who made the initial report, the age of the child, or the relationship between the child and the person being questioned.
Authorities are asking motorists who used the Key Bridge between 8:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Sunday to contact transportation police if they saw anything unusual or suspicious.
Maryland Transportation Authority Police spokesman Corporal Jonathan Green says many of the helicopters at the scene have since been called off.
Maryland Transportation Authority Police spokesman Cpl. Jonathan Green says searches Monday turned up nothing and police have no witnesses. However, Green tells The (Baltimore) Sun "everything is leading to something that did happen."
Green says investigators are questioning a "person of interest," but he's not saying whether it is the same person who called 911. Green also says he doesn't have any information about whether a child has been reported missing.
