Figures prepared for Prince William County supervisors show that the nearly 400 inmates at the county jail have been detained on federal immigration violations since July.

Only 40 people a month were originally expected to be detained under a program allowing police to check the immigration status of inmates no matter what charges they face. But figures compiled by the jail's interim superintendent, Major Peter Meletis, show the program has averaged 73 inmates a month since September.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion? That will push the cost of the program to $1.36 million this year, including the price of keeping prisoners in other jails each month due to overcrowding and paying extra overtime for deputies trained to check residency status.

Prince William County law enforcement agents say they still need more money to house illegal immigrants and hood-mounted cameras to prove that officers are not profiling.

But Chairman Corey Stewart tells The (Washington) Examiner that the numbers show the program is a success, and that the extra costs are justified.

PW County get a life!! If it wasn't for illegals, most of the jobs in the area that, "so-called-Americans" don't want, because they don't want to flip burgers or work construction outside in the cold or heat, would still be looking for workers to fill. You'll are just mad because illegals can come to America and work low paying jobs & make it towards an American Dream. Get over it.....get off your lazy butts, flip a burger & stop complaining. FYI.....I'm American! Born & raised here and I don't have a problem with it.
