Walkersville Resumes Deliberations About Muslim Retreat
posted 8:31 am Wed February 06, 2008 - WALKERSVILLE, Md.
The Walkersville Board of Zoning Appeals will resume deliberations Wednesday night on the request by a Muslim group to use local farmland for a recreational and worship center.
The board adjourned Tuesday night without a decision. During the discussion, board members cited several problems with the plan. Board member Vaughn Zimmerman said the local public safety agencies are already stretched. He added that an annual religious festival on the property would add more than 1,500 vehicles to Route 194.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community wants an exception to zoning rules to build the center on 224 acres along Woodsboro Pike. Board chairman Dan Thomas said the annual retreat would be a convention, which would be prohibited on farmland even as a special exception.
