Proposed Muslim Retreat Deliberations Continue
posted 8:38 am Thu February 07, 2008 - WALKERSVILLE, Md.
There will be more deliberations and a possible decision tonight by the Walkersville Board of Zoning Appeals on the request by a Muslim group to use local farmland for a recreational and worship center.
The board was nearing a decision Wednesday night, but members learned that Tuesday's meeting may not have been recorded because of a technical glitch. If that's the case, the panel will have to repeat its Tuesday deliberations. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community wants an exception to zoning rules to build the facility on 224 acres along Woodsboro Pike. The property would also host an annual, three-day convention that could attract up to 10,000 people. Opponents say the town can't handle that many people.
