I agree with previous posts, keep the dog on a leash when you're out and about, no matter WHAT the weather. I don't care how well trained a dog is, if it sees something it wants to get to badly enough, if it's not on a leash, it'll go after it. If I had money for everyone who's told me "my dog won't EVERY leave the yard," "I don't need a leash, my dog has had obedience training," and so on, and their dogs got hit by cars or otherwise got into trouble, I'd be a rich person today.

I agree with Tuckmeister. I guess one does not have to be that bright to be a Post writer.

Another good reason to keep your dog LEASHED when you walk them! I'm sorry, I don't feel sorry for him - I feel sorry for his dog. Any person with common sense would know a dog has NO clue that the ice isn't a firm surface to walk on. I NEVER let my dogs out on the ice down here, few places are over an inch at any one point in time. I would have of course saved him if I were in the rescuer's situation, but if he used common judgement it wouldn't have happened. He should count his blessings. Please use your heads.
