McCain, Obama Lead in Virginia Poll
posted 4:20 pm Sun February 10, 2008 - Richmond, Va.
An independent poll out Sunday shows that Barack Obama and John McCain are the favorites of likely voters in Virginia's presidential primaries on Tuesday.
The poll by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research shows Obama ahead of Hillary Clinton by 53 percent to 37 percent in the Democratic race.
On the Republican side, it's McCain with 55 percent to 27 percent for Mike Huckabee and 5 percent for Ron Paul.
McCain has broad appeal, even holding his own among religious conservatives, a key voting bloc for Huckabee. Obama dominates among black voters and those who live in the state's urban-suburban corridor from northern Virginia to Virginia Beach.
The poll was conducted by telephone last Thursday and Friday. It involved interviews with 400 likely Democratic primary voters and 400 likely Republican primary voters, with a sampling error margin of plus or minus 5 percentage points.
The candidates are making campaign appearances around the state Sunday and Monday.
