Smoking Ban Raises Few Complaints In Maryland So Far

Maryland's statewide smoking ban is two weeks old. And so far, health authorities say it's gone smoothly. Health Secretary John Colmers told lawmakers Friday that he's not aware of any complaints of bars or restaurants not complying with the ban.
Restaurant industry officials who opposed the ban also say there haven't been problems with noncompliance. The law requires restaurants to remove ashtrays and post no-smoking signs, and they could be fined for allowing smoking. But people in the industry say it'll be a long time before they know whether the ban is hurting business.
Kurt Beall is the owner of Heroes Pub in Annapolis. He shut it down temporarily to remove some of the evidence of years of smoking - replacing the ceiling and applying new paint. Beall says some people aren't happy about going outside to smoke - but they're doing it.
