As more and more workers get to be older and older - and still working - where are the jobs for the young people? Or don't they count? Employers like to hire youngsters because they're a lot less expensive than the older, experienced workers, and young people need the jobs as much as the older people do. Even more so, come to think of it, because they're just starting out with young families to support and college costs to look forward to. The older workers have been there, done that, and are working to keep their health insurance, to give them something to do other than sit around the house all day, and, of course, to keep their nice fat paychecks.
