Relatives and friends of the eight street-racing fans killed on Indian Head Highway in Accokeek returned to the crash site Monday to erect memorials of flowers, crosses and candles.
All eight of the victims have been identified. They are Ervin Gardner, 39 and Daryl Wills, 38, of Prince George's County, Maycol Lopez, 20, of Montgomery County, Otis Williams, 35, Milton Pinkney,41, Blaine Briscoe, 49 and William Gaines, 61, of Charles County, and Mark Courtney, 33, of St. Mary's County.
Prince George's County police say the identity of another victim has not been
confirmed.
Witnesses said about 50 people were gathered before dawn along Route 210 as two car spun their wheels, kicked up smoke and sped off, said Prince George's County police Cpl. Clinton Copeland.
Fans had spilled onto the smoky, dark roadway to watch the cars drive away when a white Ford Crown Victoria unexpectedly came up from behind and smashed into them.
Another seven people, including the driver, a passenger, and five race spectators, were injured. Two of those spectators are in serious condition and the injuries of all the others aren't considered life-threatening.
No charges have been filed against the driver, a 20-year-old from Waldorf, that struck the crowd. Police say the driver was not connected to the race and that smoke from the spinning tires of the cars that were racing may have obscured the crowd.
