Total Eclipse of the Moon Wednesday Night
posted 11:34 am Tue February 19, 2008 - Richmond, Va.
A total lunar eclipse Wednesday night will turn the moon a reddish color.
A lunar eclipse happens when the moon travels completely through a dark inner shadow of Earth.
Leslie Bochenski, an astronomy educator for the Science Museum of Virginia, says the moon will be fairly high when it eclipses. The higher it is, the easier it is to see.
Bochenski says lunar eclipses - unlike solar eclipses - are safe to view with the naked eye. But magnification helps, so a telescope is ideal. NASA says binoculars will work if you don't have a telescope.
A partial phase will begin at 8:43 p.m. The total eclipse, which is the darkest phase, will start just after 10 p.m. and last until shortly before 11. The whole thing will be over soon after midnight.
