Montgomery Co. Looks to Crackdown on GPS Thefts
posted 5:34 pm Tue February 19, 2008 - Rockville, Md.
GPS Units are a hot item not only with drivers but with thieves too, so Montgomery County police has launched a new program designed to help prevent automotive break-ins.
Authorities are leaving blue notes on area vehicles warning drivers who leave the navigational devices in plan view.
"They're valuable, it is the hot item right now, and they are untraceable," explains Montgomery County Police officer Michael Prather.
Police say thieves are targeting cars with the expensive electronic devices because they are able to quickly sell off the units, ranging from $20 at a pawn shop to a few hundred on auction sites like eBay.com.
Investigators hope that by warning the public to be more carefully with these units that there will be less break-ins.
