Online Sale of Health Products Dangerous to Consumer
   posted 4:13 pm Wed February 20, 2008 -
A new consumer alert is warning that common household items, now the target of organized retail crime, are selling on online auction sites, creating dangers to consumers.

Some of the products sought after include medicines like Advil and Benadryl along with beauty creams and even razors.

"I feel as if I have a receipt and I've purchased it a store. At least I can go back to the store. However, you're usually not sure of the vendors when you purchase online," said Arlington shopper Jamila Williams.

Law enforcement recently busted some of those vendors in Florida for selling up to $100 million of the stolen products on the web to people all over the country. The online prices may be tempting, but the National Retail Federation warns - buyer beware.

"These organized retail crime rings are storing this online merchandise in damp warehouses either taking away their potency or making them a health hazard," said Scott Krugman with the Retail Federation.

Baby formula is one of the best selling online products for theives. One local shopper, Susan Sanchez, is not willing to take the risk. "I check the date and everything. So I think it's safety."

Janice Brooks, another Arlington shopper, said, "With things like benadryl and stuff, you don't know whether it's real benadryl. You might have some type of reaction, so I don't think it would be safe at all."
