Dominion To Lay Underground Lines in Arlington
posted 11:15 am Sat February 23, 2008 - Arlington
Dominion Virginia Power says it will begin construction next month on nearly 3 miles of underground electric transmission lines in Arlington. The company says it will cut into roads, not private property, to install the lines between the Virginia Square and Rosslyn Metro stations. The work will be done in 100-foot-long sections.
Dominion says the lines are needed to increase power reliability and supply in the rapidly developing Rosslyn-Ballston corridor.
Arlington County Board member Chris Zimmerman says local officials were surprised by the scale of the project. He says he fears the project could cause severe traffic jams and excavation-related damage. He says the county won't issue permits for the work until all questions are resolved.
