P.G. Police Want to Expand Gunshot Sensors

Prince George's County police are looking to expand the county's gunshot detection system. Chief Melvin High is citing reduced crime levels in areas where the sensors have been placed.
The county launched the SECURES Gunshot Detection System last fall in the Palmer Park area with seven cameras and 20 gunshot sensors. In a report to the county council, High said that between October 31st and December 31st, the number of calls to police regarding gunshots from the area dropped dramatically from the same period in 2006.
High says he's seeking $975,000 to deploy 11 additional cameras and gunshot detection sensors in the Glass Manor and Kent Village areas.
The system use sonic sensors to alert police when shots are fired and can determine their exact location.
