Prince George's Police Pledge Street-racing Crackdown
posted 3:02 pm Mon February 25, 2008 - PALMER PARK, Md.
Prince George's County authorities say they plan to step up enforcement at known street-racing sites and hope to use traffic cameras to catch races as they occur.
Police say there are about 10 locations in the county that could warrant the extra attention, including sections of Route 301, Central Avenue and Indian Head Highway, where eight people were killed this month while watching an illegal street race.
"It's not a local problem; it's a regional problem, from our perspective," said Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson at a morning news conference.
They're also urging anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward. They say they've only spoken to about 20 of the roughly 200 people they believe were there.
"There is a 100 percent perfect solution, and that is for racers and spectators to take their races to a legal venue," said Prince George's County police Chief Melvin High.
"People who participate in illegal drag racing need to take pause and understand the gravity of their actions," said Vernon Herron, the Deputy Chief for Public Safety. At a news conference Monday, Police provided few details on the actual investigation, but said the driver of the white Ford Crown Victoria that plowed into the crowd passed drug and alcohol tests administered at the scene. The driver has not been charged.
