Afternoon Ice Cream Shop Robbery Shocks Neighborhood

District police want to find two gunmen, after a violent robbery at a popular ice cream store on U Street Northwest.
The two men wore masks and carried guns, but police said the afternoon robbery only landed them $300 in cash. The 23-year-old Maggie Moo employee was hit by the robbers and even dragged by her hair. "She had trouble opening the safe. He kept hitting her and he dragged her by the hair," said Melissa Freeman, the victim's sister.
Valerie Bell was thinking of stopping by for a scoop of ice cream when she says she saw the two men attack. "The first one went in and rushed to the back, the second one went in and locked the door. I could see them with the girl, so I called 911."
She says she couldn't believe it was happening at an ice cream store, at 12:15 in the afternoon. Many people who live and shop along the U Street corridor don't believe it either.
"Everyone is talking about U Street being up and coming, but it is D.C.," said Capitol Hill resident Jordan Cooper. Jovanna Ruzicic said, "I think it's concerning. I thought this area was improving a lot."
Freeman hoped the location would provide an extra level of security for her sister's job. "I know there's crime everywhere. It always worried me that she worked alone."
Police do have some potential clues in the case because the robbers left behind the masks they wore in the store. Also, surveillance cameras cover the area and police hope that gives them a better glimpse of the men who wore those masks.
