Maryland Lawmakers Revisit REAL ID Proposal
posted 8:03 am Tue February 26, 2008 - ANNAPOLIS, Md.
Maryland lawmakers will talk about looming requirements for a federal identification card Tuesday as one senator pushes again for Maryland to refuse to comply with the REAL ID Act.
The bill comes after Governor Martin O'Malley has said the state will comply with the federal rules aimed at increasing post-September-11 security. So far, 17 states have passed legislation or resolutions objecting to the REAL ID Act's provisions. Many states have cited concerns it will cost them too much to comply.
But federal authorities have vowed a showdown on the topic, with Homeland Security officials saying states must comply by May or seek waivers for more time to comply with the legislation or else their citizens will not be able to board airplanes using a state driver's license.
Democratic Senator Jennie Forehand of Montgomery County says Maryland should refuse to comply because she believes the law's requirements are onerous and unlikely to make Americans safer. Forehand's proposal will be considered in a Senate committee this afternoon. Her bill has been considered before without success.
