Amtrak Requests More Federal Funding
posted 4:54 pm Tue February 26, 2008 - Washington
Amtrak has requested nearly 1.7 billion dollars in federal funding for the next fiscal year. That would be a 26 percent increase over what the company's receiving this year.
The Bush administration has asked for only $800 million for Amtrak, the same amount it proposed last year.
Amtrak's request reflects increased costs connected to a recent labor settlement with most of the railroad's unionized workers. However, it doesn't include 114 million dollars in back wages that are to be paid out next year. Amtrak expects Congress to provide that money separately.
